GPUによる汎用計算に関する研究

GPUは,PCの標準的な付属部品であり,ディスプレイに画面を出力するための装置です.GPUは,映画やゲームなどのエンターテイメント分野における高い需要を背景に,急速に性能を向上しています.結果,最近のGPUは,CPUを追い越すだけでなく,桁違いの性能を達成しています.このようなGPUを,従来のグラフィクスだけでなく,汎用の演算器とみなして,様々な分野への応用の可能性について研究しています.

GPUグリッドを実現するためのミドルウェア

家庭や企業内の遊休計算資源としてGPUに着目し,遊休サイクルを活用するタイプのグリッドシステムを開発しています.特に,GPUの遊休状態を遠隔から検出するためのミドルウェアやマルチタスク機構について研究しています.また,バイオ情報分野において,互いに類似する部分を文字列から探すための配列アライメントの問題に対してシステムを適用し,CPUを基にする従来のグリッドシステムに対する優位性を示しました.

脱グラフィクスのためのGPU応用の開拓

脱グラフィクスを目指して,様々な分野における応用ソフトウェアを開拓して います.医療分野では,外科手術を支援するための2次元/3次元位置合わせに 対してGPU実装を開発しました.位置合わせの問題をGPUが得意とするアルゴリ ズムに帰着でき,数秒程度で位置合わせを完了できました.この結果,この問 題に関しては,1台のGPU付きノートPCが128台構成のPCクラスタよりも高速で あることを示せ,GPUの強力な演算性能を改めて認識できました.また,数値 計算分野では,LU分解について幾つかの実装を開発し,開発のための指針を与 えることを目指してそれらの比較を示しました.

GPUアプリケーションを高速化するためのツール

GPUを汎用の問題に応用するとき,一般的な実装ではGPU内部のプロセッサに計 算負荷の偏りがあります.この偏りを軽減し,プログラムを高速化するための 命令移動手法を開発しました.この手法は,アセンブリプログラムに対するデー タ依存解析に基づいています.評価の結果,18種のプログラムのうち,10種に ついて性能を改善できました.例えば,ガウシアンフィルタでは最良で40%ほ どの実行時間を削減できました.また,プログラム全体の計算量を削減できる 効果があることを示しました.この成果は,並列分散処理の分野で権威のある 国際会議IPDPSで発表しました.
